Der Tag, an dem ich lernte, dass es eigentlich ganz cool ist, jetzt in London zu sein.
The day that I realised that being in London right now is actually quite cool.
Heute ist es ein bisschen mehr als eine Woche, die ich jetzt schon wieder in London bin und ich kann (ein Glück) sagen, dass ich so langsam angekommen bin. Die Umstellung von irischer Pampa zur 3. größten Stadt Europas (ja, ich habs gegoogelt) war doch schwieriger als ich dachte. Irland war, wenn wir jetzt mal kurz von Landschaft sprechen, einfach unglaublich. Natur pur überall, was ich ziemlich genossen habe. Aber ohne eigenes Auto, 15 km weg vom nächsten Städtchen, wäre dann doch nichts für mich auf längere Zeit. Im Gegensatz dazu ist London sehr viel einfacher. Bus und Bahn vor meiner Haustür, die praktisch überall hingehen, Shops in 20 Minuten zu Fuß erreichbar und einen super Ausblick hab ich von meinem Häuschen auch.
Apropos mein Häuschen. Die Familie, bei der ich jetzt wohne, hat sich im August dazu entschieden, bye-bye zum sehr englischen Gloucestershire in den Cotswolds zu sagen, und sich aufgemacht zu ihrem eigenen London Abenteuer. Und da darf ich jetzt auch Teil dran haben. Gezogen sind sie nach Lewisham, im Südosten Londons, was für mich (und für sie natürlich) ein super Ausgangspunkt ist. London Bridge oder Shoreditch High Street sind mit der Overground gut in 20 Minuten zu erreichen und der Bus bringt mich innerhalb einer halben Stunde direkt vor die Türen der Houses of Parliament, womit ich dann praktisch mitten in der City of London bin. Zur gleichen Zeit ist es in der Nachbarschaft aber sehr ruhig, und vom Telegraph Hill Park aus hat man einen richtig coolen Ausblick auf die Skyline;
Ich bin mit meiner London Situation also eigentlich ziemlich zufrieden. Das einzige, was mir hier aber fehlt, sind andere Menschen in meinem Alter. Ja, ich verstehe mich gut mit meinen Gasteltern und ja, ich verstehe mich auch gut mit den Kiddies, aber es ist eben doch nicht vergleichbar mit echten Menschen mit denen ich abends weggehen kann, mich auf einen Kaffee treffen oder auch einfach so durch die Stadt schlendern kann. Aber daran arbeiten wir auch noch!
Today it's been a bit more than a week already that I'm in London and I feel like I can honestly say that I've settled in. Thank God, it took me longer than I thought. Turns out that the change from Irish farm life to a life in Europe's third biggest city (yeah, I had to google that) was harder than I imagined it to be.
Ireland was, speaking of landscape now, simply amazing. Pure and stunning nature. Everywhere. And that was something I really did enjoy. Being able to sit outside hearing nothing but the stream nearby, birds tweeting and the horses' neighing. Okay, I think I have to add that that was back in September and October. November mainly looked like the end of the world itself. Rain almost every day, the clouds hiding the mountains and wind blowing like crazy.
Right now, London doesn't really look much different, but it's still pretty. I quite enjoy being in a proper city again with everything accessible that I could possibly need. Twenty minutes by foot and I'm in the centre of Peckham, a cool quarter in the south-east of London. Thirty minutes on a big red bus and I'm basically in front of the Houses of Parliament in the middle of Westminster. Couldn't be better? It really couldn't. Not only is everything so easy to reach, but I also get this small village feeling around where we live which is great. Kind neighbours, small shops, cosy cafés and the busy city life just half an hour away. Plus, not being directly in the city offers a quite nice view over the acutal city. This one was taken from the top of Telegraph Hill.
So, all in all, I really do like my little London situation. The only thing I'm missing is people my age. It's cool and everything that I get along with my host family and the kids, but this part was way better in Ireland. Even though we lived quite isolated it was never boring because there was always someone around to talk to or to do something with. Here, I'm probably surrounded by tons of people my age, but I find it really hard to get in touch with anyone. But we're working on it!
